Job Description
PURPOSE SUMMARY. Review and approve plans and specifications for fire suppression, fire detection, special hazards, high piled storage, hazardous material installations. Review building construction and site development plans for compliance with fire and life-safety codes and County ordinances. Consult with and provide recommendations to architects, contractors, and the public. Prepare reports regarding reviews of plans. Make code interpretations as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES.
Work with staff, developers, architects, engineers, and builders to inform, monitor, and ensure professional and timely project permit issuance by conducting plan reviews, scheduling meetings.
Assist the Fire Code Official in preparing and adopting fire codes and fire prevention ordinances and standards, and related work as assigned. Individuals in this position will also be expected to become proficient in conducting inspections in newly constructed buildings.
Perform fire prevention plan review of architectural plans and system shop drawings to ensure compliance with applicable State and local fire safety laws, ordinances, and codes.
May participate in meetings with contractors, architects, developers, engineers, and other staff before and during construction activity.
Perform technical inspections of varying complexities, including commercial, multi-family, institutional, and industrial construction, to ensure compliance with applicable State and local fire safety laws, ordinances, and codes.
Advise of any field conditions that are potentially hazardous and controversial.
Prepare and submit reports/comments relative to findings from fire safety inspections. Orders corrections of hazardous conditions and provides follow-up inspections or enforcement as necessary for newly constructed buildings.
Responsible for inspecting projects under construction for compliance with fire codes.
Perform fire plans review on new construction and renovations.
Inspect fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems, and fire pumps.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS.
A. Education. High School Diploma or equivalent. Associates degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
B. Experience. Five (5) years of experience in inspections, plans examination, code interpretation and/or general fire codes enforcement activities.
C. Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County Policy
D. Licenses/Certifications. Valid driver’s license. Must maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy. International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) or International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector certification required at the time of hire. ICC or NFPA Plans Examiner Certification required within first year of hire. ICC Fire Inspector 2 or NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) preferred.
E. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver’s license record, etc.). Must pass pre-employment background check and driving record check.

Prepare written plan review correspondence and update information in software programs.
Prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Clear, concise oral and written communication to prepare reports and present technical instruction and direction to inspectors, contractors, and homeowners.
Compensation Range
$25.41 - $41.25
