We are filling two vacancies for either a level I, II, or Senior Plans Examiner depending on qualifications.
HIRING RANGES
Plans Examiner I: $39.13 - $43.48/hour
Plans Examiner II: $43.02 - $47.80/hour
Senior Plans Examiner: $47.32 - $52.58/hour
Plans Examiner I Job Description
The Plans Examiner I position will work with Building Department staff to ensure safe and well-designed buildings are constructed within the City of Lakewood. The primary responsibility of the Plans Examiner I is the review of residential structures for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with building codes and City standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion. Employees must be able to perform the essential duties of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supports and advances a non-bureaucratic culture of cooperation with private parties to accomplish building and development goals in a manner consistent with the intent of the building codes and ordinances adopted by the Citty of Lakewood.
Provide plan review for all types of residential, commercial, and industrial projects and developments to ensure completeness, accuracy and compliance to the adopted IRC, IBC and City Ordinances.
Craft concise written input that communicates deficiencies and when appropriate, offers suggestions and strategies to meet the goals of both the designers and the City adopted codes and regulations.
Collaborate with other development stakeholders including the City Planning and Zoning; Sustainability and Engineering groups as well as outside agencies such as West Metro Fire, the county Health Department and variety of water and sewer service providers to ensure comprehensive reviews and input that adds value to the project.
Provides exceptional customer service with regards to professionalism, accuracy of information and reasonable response time when addressing inquiries from staff or the public via phone, email, or in person.
Thoughtfully considers alternative approaches proposed by designers and builders that accomplish the purposes of the codes adopted by the City.
Actively seeks out and accepts mentoring from experienced colleagues including Plans Examiners, Building Inspectors, and the Building Official when questions arise or difficult and complex issues occur with contractors, architects, developers, or homeowners.
Quickly assess incoming project submittals for completeness upon application.
Display competent project management skills by tracking and coordinating projects through the building permit process.
Enthusiastically maintains certifications with continuing code education and pursues professional advancement with acquisition of advanced ICC certifications.
Must demonstrate performance excellence with respect to timelines, attendance, friendliness, responsiveness and contribution to the greater good of the team.
Must be able to perform a variety of related tasks and duties as assigned to support the overall goals and success of the building department.

Experience
No previous Plans Examination experience required.
Certification/Licenses/Specialized Training
Current ICC Residential Plans Examiner certification or obtained within 1 year
Valid driver’s license with acceptable motor vehicle record
Plans Examiner II Job Description

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
LIGHT WORK: Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
